Okay, so Sophia Bolinder is a name you’re going to want to remember. The Malmö-based pop/R&B singer just dropped her new single “My Own Company” featuring John Soul, and it’s genuinely one of those tracks that sneaks up on you.
The song sits in that sweet spot between smooth R&B and polished pop. Sophia’s vocals are warm and easy to follow, and John Soul’s contribution adds a nice layer that keeps things interesting, also, the production, handled by UK duo Archie Norris and Jack Buster Weston of Songarchitect, is clean and spacious. There’s room to breathe here, which I always appreciate.
The track draws loose inspiration from Tevin Campbell’s “Can We Talk”, and while you can catch a faint nod to that classic 90s R&B smoothness, you can listen ot it here, “My Own Company” has carved out its own identity. The theme is post-breakup empowerment, but it never feels preachy or heavy-handed about it. It’s more like catching up with a friend who’s finally doing well after a rough patch.
I’ve had this on repeat for a few days now and it holds up. It’s not trying to reinvent anything, it just does what it does really well. For an independent release, the quality is genuinely impressive. And if you want to keep tabs on what Sophia does next, go follow her on Instagram.
