The band name sounded like a history podcast and I’m glad it landed on my radar. “The Great Refusal” is the lead single off Motihari Brigade’s upcoming album “Problematic”, and it’s a sharp, riff-heavy track about AI anxiety that somehow doesn’t come off preachy.

The guitar work is the star here. There’s a riff early on that just cuts through everything, and the bass underneath is doing way more than you’d expect from a song this aggressive, weaving around the riff rather than just locking into it, and the drums hit like they’re trying to get your attention, not just keep time. That’s what sells the whole thing. There’s a line about karma catching up with us that lands harder than expected on first listen. Blunt, almost funny, but with real frustration sitting underneath it. You can tell these guys have opinions about where things are headed, and they’re not bothering to be subtle about any of it.

This song isn’t reinventing anything, and it doesn’t need to. It’s straightforward rock with teeth, and sometimes that’s exactly what you want when every other band is chasing some glossy, processed sound. A good riff still works. If “Problematic” keeps this energy, it could be a fun, angry record worth your time.

Give it a spin and see if it gets under your skin the way it got under mine.
