This Basel duo’s debut single caught me off guard in the best way. Daniel Messina and Daniel Somaroo switch between Portuguese and Spanish seamlessly, Messina takes the verses and chorus in Portuguese, then Somaroo comes in with Spanish sections that tie everything together. The hook has been stuck in my head since first listen.

The anti-racism angle could’ve been heavy-handed, but they pulled it off. Singing about seeing beyond surface level and embracing different perspectives actually matches how the song is built, two languages flowing into each other naturally. You get the message without feeling like you’re being lectured.

Fernando Brox on flute and David Cogliatti on piano fill out the sound nicely without getting in the way. Recording in Somaroo’s Kleinbasel studio seems to have given them room to experiment, and that freedom comes across in how relaxed and confident they sound. The Brazilian influences are definitely there, but they mix with modern pop in a way that doesn’t sound forced or like they’re trying too hard.

For a first release, they’ve put together a track that manages to be catchy while still having something to say, which isn’t easy to do. Make sure you follow Cantoria do Amor on social media down below to stay updated on their upcoming releases and performances.
