Rachel Swain’s “Old Familiar Way” has a nice trick to it, it takes the bones of a heartbreak song and gives them some kick. That choice really works. Plenty of country tracks get stuck staring at the mess. This one sounds more like it’s had the argument, ordered another drink, and gone back out into the crowd.

What I like here is the mood. It is not sugary, and it is not trying to be overly raw either. There’s some bite in it. The pedal steel and the honky-tonk lean give the song movement, but it does not come off slick or overly staged. It feels like Swain knows exactly how much edge the track needs and does not overplay it.

That is probably why the song lands. The attitude feels natural. You can picture this working live, where a room full of people could dance to it and still catch the sting underneath. That balance is hard to pull off. A lot of artists aim for that mix and end up sounding forced. Swain keeps it loose.

Her voice helps a lot too. There’s some wear in it, which suits the song. A smoother delivery would have made the whole thing less believable. Here, the roughness gives the track some character and stops it from sounding too polished.

“Old Familiar Way” leaves a strong first impression because it does not beg for attention. It just knows what kind of song it wants to be. Follow Rachel Swain on Instagram.
