Strip a track down to solo piano and you usually get something you put on in the background and forget about. This is not that.
Paul Terry, who makes music as Aptøsrs, has fully rebuilt “Rust Mountain” from scratch. Same song, completely different thing. The piano line keeps shifting, goes from almost hesitant to genuinely urgent, and never lands on anything predictable for long. It keeps you paying attention, which is not always a given with piano-only releases. Mixer Adam Noble has worked with Biffy Clyro and Paul McCartney, and that pedigree shows up in how much space this track actually has.
My first reaction after finishing it was to go look for the original version with the full drums and strings. I wanted to hear what this same arrangement sounds like when it gets loud. That curiosity is probably the best thing a stripped-back version can leave you with.
