Erro’s second album proves they’re not interested in playing it safe. “Shadowland” takes the raw, one-take approach from their debut and doubles down on it, with results that actually justify the hype.

The album opens strong and stays there. “Honey Bear Lane” has this infectious bassline that pulls you in before the guitar work starts doing its thing, very Floyd-inspired but never derivative. “The Watcher” throws piano and horns together in a way that could’ve been a mess but somehow creates this earworm of a chorus you’ll be humming for weeks. Then there’s “Words About Life,” which strips everything down to vocals and strings and reminds you that good songwriting doesn’t need bells and whistles.

Nikki Stagel and the rotating crew of collaborators bring an energy that’s hard to fake. You can hear the room they recorded in, the imperfections that come from capturing a performance instead of constructing one. Michael Gerver’s production knows when to step back and let these moments speak for themselves.
