Audren released a new single that I really love, and I’m here for that kind of honesty.

The track starts with just Audren and a piano, then slowly brings in the full band, and the fretless bass adds this unexpected warmth, and when the guitar and piano trade lines, it actually sounds like a conversation. You don’t hear that much anymore.

Her voice has lived some life, you can tell. But she’s not drowning in sadness. There’s determination mixed in there. The ending doesn’t shove happiness down your throat and it just suggests that maybe love and small steps forward are worth considering, which feels earned after everything that came before it. I like that Audren and producer Chris Rime left room for the musicians to improvise. You can hear them responding to each other in real time, which gives the song an authenticity that’s hard to fake. No sterile studio tricks here. Just talented people in a room making music together.
