The Buddyrevelles have been making indie rock since 1998, and the new single “Make the Dings Louder” sounds like a band who never lost the thread. It’s the second track off their upcoming EP The Conviction, and it opens with the kind of instrumentation that makes you turn your head. Not loud for the sake of it, just confident. Like the song already knows where it’s going.
The vocal interplay that follows is one of the best parts. There’s a call-and-response quality to it that keeps things from feeling flat, and then the hooks kick in and kind of refuse to leave. I’ve had pieces of this song stuck in my head at random moments, which is usually a good sign. The melodies build on each other, and the lyrics have actual meaning, the kind where you catch a new meaning on a second or third listen. It sounds like it was always supposed to be there. It closes the song in a way that feels satisfying rather than showy.
The Conviction wraps up the band’s three-year Trilogy of the EPs series, and if this single is any indication, the final chapter is going to be a good one. Give it a listen and go show them some love on Instagram.
