Edie Yvonne is still a teenager, and she’s already writing songs that make you do a double-take. “Act of Love”, the lead single off her forthcoming EP Look Me in the Eye, the release dropped June 1st, and it’s a sharp left turn from what fans might expect.
The song is built almost entirely around acoustic guitar, and that’s kind of the whole point, and Edie has said the track is about letting fear and projection get in the way of connection, and how hurt becomes cyclical if it’s never dealt with. Heavy stuff, but she doesn’t oversell it. The restraint is what makes it land.
Her voice does all the work. She’s got a falsetto she uses at exactly the right moments, and it’s the kind of thing you don’t notice until you’re two listens in and wondering why it stuck with you. Compared to “Girl Code”, the arrangement here has a lot more breathing room. Percussion stays minimal, the guitars never crowd out her vocals, and her delivery feels relaxed in the best way. She’s not performing anxiety. She’s just being honest.
