Okay so the thing nobody tells you about breakup songs is that the good ones are usually a little embarrassed about themselves. This one is and that’s why we love it.
Jason McKee’s vocal sits way back in the mix for most of the track, almost mumbling, like he’s talking himself into finishing the thought before he loses the nerve. I kept waiting for a big swell to come in and rescue him and it just… doesn’t, not until way later than you’d expect. Credit to whoever made that call. Most breakup ballads can’t help themselves, they go big in the first chorus. This one makes you sit in the discomfort first.
Jessica McPherson-Riley shows up on harmonies partway through and honestly steals the back half of the song. Not because she’s louder or flashier, she isn’t, but because her part sounds like the version of the conversation Jason couldn’t have at the time. Two people circling the same memory from opposite angles. That’s a neat trick for a duet to pull off and a lot of duets don’t bother trying.
Production-wise it’s pretty plain, piano and voice carrying almost everything, and I think that’s the right call even if it means the song asks more of your patience than your average single. The bridge drags a beat too long for my taste. Still, there’s a real idea in here, not just a vibe. Give it a spin and follow along, Reetoxa’s got more coming.
