I pressed play on this mostly out of curiosity and ended up listening three times back to back. Jon Gold’s new single is bossa nova with lyrics in both English and Portuguese, and it works in a way that bilingual songs often don’t quite pull off.
Jon wrote it and plays piano, and you can tell the composition was thought through carefully. Nothing is cluttered. There’s a lot of open space in the arrangement, and the track earns it. Marina Marchi handles the vocals, and she’s the kind of singer who makes it all feel easy, which of course means she’s doing a lot. Her voice is warm and a little playful. The song is about being present in love, not looking backward or forward, and she nails that specific feeling.
Guilherme Hoss on guitar is doing something very João Gilberto. Understated, precise, never overplaying. Bruno Tessele on drums stays so far in the pocket you almost forget he’s there. That’s a compliment.
What I keep coming back to is how unforced it all sounds. The Portuguese lines don’t feel dropped in for effect. They belong there. Jon is making his first attempt at writing lyrics with this release, and honestly? You wouldn’t guess it.
