Stepping back into the studio after two decades away is no small feat, but Jamie Godman makes it look remarkably natural with his new solo venture. Operating under the name Universe 25, the Canterbury-based artist channels a rich history from past bands like Door Marked Summer and Nine 9 into something entirely sharper and thoroughly modern. This debut self-titled release leans heavily into post-punk, industrial grit, and dark electronics, driven by a distinct urgency that cuts straight through the noise of daily life.
What makes this record stand out is the sheer honesty behind its creation. Godman handled the writing, arranging, performing, and mixing entirely on his own from home. Modern production tools and digital audio workstations allowed him to bring this vision to life around ongoing health and mobility challenges, and the resulting sound carries an authentic weight born from real experience rather than corporate polish.
The album takes inspiration from the famous behavioral mouse experiment, using it as a clever lens to examine modern anxieties. Tracks dig into heavy topics like online tribalism, surveillance, consumerism, and the strange nature of parasocial ties. Yet the commentary never feels heavy-handed or academic. Instead, the sharp observations ground themselves in catchy, driving rhythms that keep you locked in from the opening track to the final fade-out. It is an impressive return for someone who thought that chapter of their life was permanently closed, proving that great songwriting only gets better with time and perspective.
