The Shrubs shake things up with this one, and it’s a good move. The Houston trio puts together guitar lines that weave around each other while Miguel sings about relationships coming apart. It’s upbeat on the surface but darker underneath, which is a cool trick to pull off.
Josh, Miguel, and Sophie took years getting this right, and the time shows. They recorded it at their home studio in Katy using old analog gear, which gives everything a warm, slightly rough around the edges sound. Nothing here is too clean or overthought. This is different and the guitars do most of the heavy lifting. They’re bright and energetic but never overshadow the lyrics about breaking up. It’s that push and pull between upbeat music and heavy subject matter that makes it work. The analog recording process adds character without being gimmicky. You get that retro warmth but it still sounds like a band finding their own voice.
