Lost Lot tackles death and grief with surprising warmth on “Waiting,” a track that shouldn’t work as well as it does. The concept of a spirit watching over loved ones after death could easily slip into maudlin territory, but the North East alt-country band finds genuine emotion without the melodrama.
The production, handled by Ben Squires and Matt Dunbar, gives the track room to breathe while maintaining intimacy. The band describes it as “a perfect driving song,” which sounds contradictory given the theme, but makes complete sense once you hear it.
Lost Lot continues building on the promise of their self-titled debut EP, showing they can handle weighty themes without losing their accessibility. The influences of Jason Isbell, Wilco, and Springsteen are clear but not overwhelming.
If this track hits you like it did me, give Lost Lot a follow and you’ll want to hear what’s next.
