Alex Wellkers has put together a solid 13-track album that benefits from his decision to work with actual musicians rather than relying solely on digital instruments.
The live string arrangements really make a difference here. Musicians like Mariia Vakhnenko and Julia Stein contribute violin and viola parts that give the songs genuine warmth. Wellkers isn’t afraid to switch languages either – you’ll find German on “alles nicht so schlimm” and French on “tu es ici”. The variety keeps you guessing about where he’ll go next. Tracks like “she will say” get straight to the point in under three minutes, while others like “mystic saint” take their time building atmosphere.
The production is incredible, thanks to Stephan Steiner’s mixing and Dan Suter’s mastering. With contributions from harpist Mercedes Bralo and various drummers including Kyle Abbott and David Méndez, the album avoids the trap of sounding too uniform or predictable. For an independent release coming out of Switzerland, this shows real ambition and careful attention to craft.
