Rosetta West’s latest is a wild ride, titled “God of the Dead”, and to be clear and honest with you, the band doesn’t know how to make boring music. Joseph Demagore handles most of the heavy lifting here, singing, playing guitar, and piano, and he’s got this knack for switching between crushing blues and tender moments that’ll catch you off guard.
The rhythm section gets shuffled around with Mike Weaver and Nathan Q. Scratch trading drum duties, while Orpheus Jones holds it down on bass. A couple of guest musicians jump in too, Louis Constant adds some low-end magic to “Midnight” and drummer Caden Cratch pounds the skins on “Boneyard Blues”. This album is all over the map in the best way possible. You get searing feedback that’ll rattle your speakers, then suddenly you’re hit with a piano ballad. The punk stuff hits hard, the funk grooves actually groove, and when they go full psychedelic, it works.
Rosetta West keeps doing their own thing, and frankly, we need more bands like this. They’re not trying to fit into any particular box, and that’s exactly why this album works so well. Follow Rosetta West on Spotify for more of his underground mayhem.
