Ratfink recorded this album with cheap gear and a laptop that got beer spilled on it, which should tell you everything about the vibe here. WHEN U WERE MINE is rough around the edges and doesn’t apologize for it. The songs are just impressive.
The singles ‘About Ya’, ‘Gay Song’, and ‘Plastic Bits’ came out before the full album, and they’re still the strongest tracks, but the deep cuts hold their own. Ratfink writes melodies that get stuck in your head even when the recording quality isn’t perfect. His partner Liv shows up on some tracks, usually at weird hours apparently, and her voice adds a nice contrast to keep things interesting.
This is the kind of album that reminds you why people make music in the first place, not to sound expensive or impress anyone, just to get the songs out. Ratfink clearly cares more about writing good songs than making them sound pretty, and that honesty comes through.
