Sean MacLeod is no newcomer. As a founding member of Dublin’s Cisco, he spent years cutting his teeth in a band that earned serious attention at home and abroad, even recording with U2’s Paul Barrett and that history matters because you can hear it in how comfortable he sounds here. This isn’t someone figuring things out, this is a talented artist who has been doing this long enough to know when to pull back and let the song breathe.
“Take Control (Don’t Let ‘Em)” is the opening track and fourth single from his upcoming fifth album, That’s When the Earth Becomes a Star. After his previous single went in a more experimental direction, this one comes back to raw, straightforward indie pop, and it suits him well. The guitar tones have this natural shimmer to them that feels lived-in rather than polished to death, and the chorus sticks around long after the song ends. Not in an annoying way, but in the way where you find yourself humming it while doing something completely unrelated.
