Most punk songs about politics come from people who eat, sleep, and breathe the stuff. Reetoxa is the opposite. Former navy sailor, self-described political know-nothing, and apparently someone who nearly killed himself writing 1800 songs during Melbourne’s lockdown. “War Killer” is the odd one out in his catalog, and honestly, that’s what makes it interesting.
Reetoxa caught a news showing Trump and Kim Jong-un together and for someone who spent a decade on navy vessels being told North Korea was basically the final boss, it was a lot to process. Reetoxa has said he and producer Simon Moro both looked at each other like they’d done something they’d regret. It has that feeling, the slightly reckless energy of something recorded before anyone talked themselves out of it.
The Sham 69 influence is audible, and the sentiment is similar too. Less about picking a side, more about the absurdity of everyone being at each other’s throats constantly, and coming from a guy who genuinely doesn’t align with any camp, it lands a bit differently than your typical political punk. Go give it a follow on socials if this sounds like your thing.
