Trickshooter Social Club is a Chicago band built around guitarist Larry Liss and singer Steve Simoncic, and this EP sounds like what happens when two guys have been playing together long enough to stop overthinking it. There’s no fussing around with production tricks or fashionable genre tags. They play roots rock, the guitars are loud, and Simoncic sings like he means it.
The thing that got me is how the record sits with you. It’s not a big statement, and it’s not trying to smack you over the head. A track starts and you just find yourself turning the volume up. The blues influence is there but it never tips into noodling. The alt-country edge keeps it moving. Liss’s guitar is the engine. Tight, dry, purposeful. Simoncic’s voice has some grit to it but it’s controlled, not theatrical. The rhythm section doesn’t showboat. It all just fits.
Fans of Old 97’s, Lucero, or early Social Distortion will probably feel right at home here. Give it a proper listen, not background noise. It earns the attention. Follow them on Instagram to catch upcoming shows and new releases.
