If you have been craving country music that feels like a genuine conversation rather than a calculated radio hit, you need to spin the new record from Sam Platts. Having recently dropped, Right Where I Belong is a beautiful ten-track collection that perfectly captures what modern Americana should sound like. Right Where I Belong is one of those releases that grabs your attention from the first listen.
The talented artist recently relocated from Wyoming down to Seguin, Texas, and you can absolutely hear that sense of transition and travel woven into these songs. He wrote almost every single track himself, giving the project a grounded, authentic vibe that hits you right in the chest. His wife Lilly joins in on the fiddle, which adds a lovely, personal layer to the whole experience.
The standout moments for me are the introspective “Hopeless” and the rambling spirit of “I Came Into Town A Stranger”. Dave Biller’s pedal steel work on this album is spectacular, wrapping around Platts’ vocals in a way that feels incredibly warm and live. Songs like “Elk Mountain” and “Free To A Good Home” remind me a bit of Ian Tyson or Colter Wall, but Platts completely owns his own style. There are zero gimmicks here. This is just honest storytelling about hard work, family, and finding your footing in a changing world.
