Rage Unfold out of Sofia just put out a single that’s a lot more fun than you’d expect from something this technical. “My Division” is about fighting yourself, basically, and it works without being preachy. Bozhidar Popov wrote and plays guitar on it, and Siegfried Schüßler sings with the kind of power you need for this type of music.

The Iron Maiden and Metallica influences are obvious, but they’re doing their own thing here. They mixed hard rock with prog elements, switching time signatures and scales around, and it doesn’t fall apart. Usually when bands get this ambitious it turns into a show-off session, but they kept the songs intact.

Marie-Louise Anastas co-wrote the lyrics and they left enough room for interpretation, which helps. You can apply it to whatever you’re dealing with. Even with all the complexity under the hood, the song has hooks. That’s harder to do than it sounds.

Recording happened in Bulgaria and they got a good sound. Aggressive but clear. If you’re into bands that can actually play but also remember that songs need to be memorable, check this out. Rage Unfold might be onto something here, and you should follow them on Instagram because if this is where they’re starting, it’ll be worth seeing where they go from here.
