Here’s a thing that actually happened, Patti Zlaket watched a documentary about legendary session bassist Lee Sklar, cold-emailed him to say thanks, and he wrote back. She asked if he’d play on a song. He said yes. That’s how Dance Again got made.

Patti hadn’t put out a record in twenty years. She’d been gigging regularly, but recording was a different thing. Watching Immediate Family, the doc about The Section players, apparently flipped a switch. Good thing it did.

The album has Sklar on bass and Tariqh Akoni producing, which is a combination that could easily tip into glossy and overdone. It doesn’t. Akoni’s credits include Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Lopez, but this record doesn’t sound like either of those. It sounds like a songwriter who knows exactly what she’s doing and found the right people to back her up.

“Love Is For You” v is my favorite and it got picked up by Apple Music’s New In Rock global playlist alongside Foo Fighters and Peter Gabriel. She’s also been selling out tour dates. For someone re-entering after two decades out of the studio, that’s not nothing.

If you like smart, well-crafted rock with real players behind it, give this one a spin. Follow Patti Zlaket on Instagram and add Dance Again to your Spotify library.
