I put on “You Deserve Better Than Me” earlier, and it ended up sticking with me. Reetoxa is the project of Melbourne artist Jason McKee, and this track drops the heavy production to focus on a single awkward moment. “You Deserve Better Than Me” is my favorite of this week.
The backstory is pretty relatable. Reetoxa wrote it after a Tinder date in South Yarra. Everything went fine, but he realized he wasn’t feeling a real spark and didn’t want to string her along. That exact feeling carries the whole track. It sounds like the conversation you have when you like someone as a person, but you just know it isn’t going anywhere.
They tracked it at The Avenue studio in Cheltenham with a solid live feel. Kit Riley swapped the bass progression right before recording, and the band nailed it almost instantly. McKee’s delivery stays completely down to earth, which makes the chorus stick in your head.
It offers a nice, quiet break on his double album Soliloquy. Give it a listen if you’re into direct, acoustic-leaning indie tunes. Check out his Instagram to keep up with upcoming shows and future music.
