When a local album re-appears after years, I’m often skeptical. I’m glad I listened to Elysian Fields’ 1995 release, ‘Definition’, because it’s a solid collection of indie pop-rock. If you enjoy finding forgotten bands from the era, this is a fun listen.
What is impressive is Kerri Murray’s powerful, expressive vocals, which hold the whole thing together. ‘Staying With You’ is a gentle ballad that avoids being too cheesy, which I appreciate. The band’s songwriters, James Shumway and Mark Roos, clearly know how to write a good melody. Other songs like ‘Wings to Fly’ and ‘Eternal Flame’ are catchy and highlight different sides of the band’s sound.
“There are moments when you can tell it’s a 90s recording, but the production by Cliff Maag is still quite impressive, thanks in part to Dale Sandberg’s work in the studio. It’s a real shame this band didn’t stay together longer than a couple of years because their music deserves to be heard. It’s cool to have this album available to stream now.
